[Managing IP] Proving value to clients goes beyond ‘simple metrics’

Managing IP’s article on our recent survey, 2024 IP Impact Study: Trends in Benchmarking Value, highlighted the experience of law firms as they prove value to their clients when it comes to intellectual property concerns. They spoke to senior figures at four firms to learn whether those results resonated with them.  

The article references the importance of IP teams being business partners as discussed in the report:

[Lisa] Adams at Mintz says knowledge of clients’ businesses is a key way that her firm shows value. “I think that makes you more of a strategic partner. You should understand what their business goals are and where their products fit in,” she says. 

She adds that it’s also important to know the market well as well as what competitors are doing. While knowledge of clients’ businesses can be somewhat subjective, there are some things that firms do to try to demonstrate their understanding and willingness to learn.
