Law.com reporter Ross Todd spoke with Conor Sheehan of UnitedLex about the opportunities and risks of applying AI to source code review in intellectual property disputes.

While AI promises efficiency in legal work, its use in highly sensitive tasks, such as source code review, raises complex questions. Sheehan explains that reviewing source code—often the “holy grail” of software companies—requires strict security, human oversight, and meticulous analysis.

Although AI tools can assist in the early stages, such as document search or pattern recognition, current technology cannot securely handle offline, protected environments that are essential in these cases. The future may bring hybrid solutions, but for now, human-led, court-tested methods remain irreplaceable.
